On Fields, Flocks and Finding Inspiration

Irish highlands with sheep dotted throughout

My partner, Andrew, and I recently returned from a two-week adventure in Ireland. It was my first time exploring the Emerald Isle, and as a fan of rural landscape and all things sheep, I was not disappointed.

Endless hilltops dotted with sheep (we came to refer to them affectionately as sheep-a-dots) did their work to inspire this felter. My well needed a good refilling, and that it got.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Kerry Woollen Mills. Set in the unbelievably beautiful Ring of Kerry, this mill was established over 300 years ago and is one of the last working woollen mills in Ireland. We took a tour with one of the members of the Eadie family, now in its fourth generation running the mill.

Although the process has become increasingly mechanized over the years, much of the equipment has been with the mill for decades and is stunning to look at in its own right. Many of the original 300 year old buildings are still standing and operational.

I came away from the trip with a renewed appreciation for the material I’m most passionate about working with and can’t wait to return for more inspiration the next chance I get. In the meantime, don’t worry. As it turns out, you can cram your body weight in wool into a stuff sack, and you’d better believe that I did.
